What is BMI?

Overweight and obesity are both labels for ranges of weight that are greater than what is generally considered healthy for a given height.

For adults overweight and obesity ranges are determined by using weight and height to calculate a number called the Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is a number calculated from a person’s weight and health. BMI is a fairly reliable indicator of body fatness for most people.
It does not measure body fat directly, but research has shown that BMI correlates to direct measures of body fat, such as underwater weighing and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. BMI is not perfect but still an excellent measure to assess people risk of health complications.
BMI can guide to better health. BMI goes down as the persons exercise and have a good diet, it means the person becoming healthier and hard work is paying off.

Calculating BMI is one of the best methods for population assessment of overweight and obesity. Because calculation requires only height and weight, it is inexpensive and easy to use for clinicians and for the general public.
